What University do you attend? Undergrad/Grad?
Rising junior at Georgetown University
Why did you choose DCPS?
Chancellor Kaya Henderson was speaking at Georgetown’s inaugural Black Alumni Summit and talked about how the most qualified college graduates are heading into fields like banking, consulting, STEM, law, etc., while our least qualified college graduates choose public school teaching as a last resort. She then talked about some of the different strategies DCPS has been utilizing in order to attract top candidates, including competitive salaries and multiple opportunities for performance bonuses. Before listening to her speak, I only briefly considered a career in public education. As a low-income student, it didn’t make sense for me to pursue a career that wouldn’t allow me access to upward social mobility. After listening to the Chancellor speak, however, I was relieved to know that my concerns didn’t fall on deaf ears and adjustments were actively being made.
What are some of your favorite hobbies?
Taking naps, academic counseling, and getting lost in the “related videos” section of Youtube.
If you could be any animal, what would you be? Why?
I would want to be an owl because they are symbols of wisdom, and I believe a keen sense of wisdom will be immensely beneficial for me in my academic, intellectual, personal, and social pursuits in the future.
