UELIP REFLECTIONS

By Senior Associate: Timothy Spicer Jr.

Serving as a UELIP has been more than rewarding. With firsthand experience in the DC Public Schools Central Office, I have developed the tools necessary to further progress in the education sector. In the Office of Chief of Schools, I was assigned to the Academic Planning & Support Team. Through meticulous formatting and filtering, I used Microsoft Excel to analyze data highlighting the impact of Evening Credit Recovery (ECR).

ECR enrolls students in evening courses if they are behind in high school credits. With the data provided, we met with counselors to discuss upcoming enrollment and prospective graduates. Prior to the Urban Education Leaders Internship Program, most of my work consisted of face-to-face interaction with children. Although I grew fond of my time in the office, I was still able to visit schools during site visits for presenting data. Through volunteering opportunities, such as the NACAC (National Association of College Admission Counseling) College Fair, I was able to engage students and see the impact of my work on schools.  DC Public Schools offers a great deal of exposure to interns and the opportunity to make your experience worthwhile by engaging with others who share the same interests.
